Goodbye Hollyood Video Hello ???

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

It is official Hollywood video is closing both of it’s stores in Elgin Il.  This really stinks I have been going to my local store for movies every week for the last 2.5 years. The closest store is now two far away. So I guess I will be canceling my MVP subscription.  I looked on the Hollywoodvideo.com web site and noticed that they have updated the store location database. If you want to find out if your local Hollywood Video store will be closing you can check out your location using their store locator.

If Hollywood wants to survive they need to go directly to download movies and skip DVDs all together. They already have a great recommendation service that will help drive sales.

mSpoke A new recommendation engine on the block

Monday, September 24th, 2007

I learned about a new recommendation engine company today called mSpoke. They are based out of Pittsburgh PA and seems to have gotten their start in the financial markets, helping banker pick stocks. Currently they are deployed on two sites, their own rss reader called FeedHub, and website called Supply Chain Daily. Judging from these examples it seems that the mPower engine is tuned twords text based content, as both of the sites listed as example deployments are text based. I would like to see a job search engine based on this technology. It could send you tailored job listings instead of just keyword based listings that you get now from most job sites.

New Idea Monday #7 Affiliate Network Devoted to Used Cars

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Everything seems to have some type of affiliate network right now. One space that doesn’t seem to have much coverage yet is used/new cars. It might be interesting to see if you could setup a PPC network that car dealers could submit their used car inventory to. These could then be aggregated through an API to anyone who wanted to make a used car website. Seems like a ripe place to start a new network.

Links from “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferriss

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

This weekend I plowed through “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferriss. It was an interesting read and offers some interesting theories. While I personally don’t think I will ever get to the 4 hour work week I do plan to implement some of the suggestions about time management and using some of the business plans to implement side sources of income. f I were to fully implement his plan I would like to travel in a 40 foot RV and see all the odd, wierd, neat things that the US has to offer. Since I got this book from the library I thought I would note the urls and links from the book from me to look at later.

New Idea Monday #6 White Label video sharing service.

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

This idea was inspired by another blog that I read. The author is in the process of setting up a new website and wanted a service where he could upload videos and embed this videos on his site. At the end of the video it would show similar videos from his other available videos only. He could then use these videos to help market his products inside his website.  You could mix in a little recommendation technology and you have a killer marketing app. You could charge users a nominal fee for hosting the videos.
